About Smithfield and its Surrounds

With no railway passing through the town, it has remained a small trading centre catering to the needs of a community of approximately 7 000 permanent inhabitants. Located 130 kilometres from Bloemfontein on the N6 route to the Eastern Cape or as an alternative passing instead though Bethulie to rejoin the N1 at the Gariep dam, Smithfield is an ideal stopover location. Activities available to travelers include mountain biking, hiking, golfing and canoeing. And if it is star gazing you are after, the night skies are spectacular!
